BYD Atto 1's A$19,990 deal: What Australian buyers get

The Atto 1 Essential is advertised at A$19,990 driveaway. Here are the Australian offer dates, the correct range figure and the charging questions to check before ordering.

BYD's small electric hatchback has a new reason to attract Australian attention: the Atto 1 Essential is advertised at A$19,990 driveaway. The offer began on 15 September 2026, putting a new electric-car option below the A$20,000 mark. For anyone comparing a first EV with a petrol runabout, the useful question is what that particular price includes.

The offer applies to the Essential

BYD's Australian offer and conditions identify the Essential grade, with orders from 15 September to 15 December and delivery required by 31 December 2026. This is an advertised driveaway price, rather than a base price before on-road costs. Metallic paint costs extra. The promotion is for eligible retail purchases; demonstrators and transactions combining additional discounts are excluded. Availability matters, and BYD says delivery within the promotional period is not guaranteed.

Check the right range figure

The official Australian model comparison gives the Essential a 65kW front-wheel-drive motor and a claimed 220km WLTP driving range. The Premium has different figures: 115kW and 310km WLTP. Those larger numbers should not be attached to the A$19,990 Essential offer. BYD also cautions that real range varies with factors including driving style, traffic and load.

That distinction matters when browsing images or headline specifications. A shopper should ask to test the exact grade on the quote, then check the seating, boot and controls against an ordinary week's journeys. Include the longer trip you make regularly, rather than judging suitability only by a short commute.

Price the charging routine too

BYD's home-charging guide lists a 7kW single-phase wall charger and an 11kW three-phase version. Actual charging speed depends on the vehicle and the electrical installation, and the company requires installation by a licensed electrician. Before ordering equipment, get a site-specific installation quote and check local requirements. Apartment residents should establish what charging access their parking arrangement allows.

A useful comparison puts the written vehicle quote, chosen paint, insurance, charging equipment and expected electricity use alongside each alternative. If public charging would be your main option, check nearby locations, tariffs and the time involved. The low advertised purchase price is a starting point; a workable weekly charging routine is what makes the car practical to own.
